This thought-provoking short story from the golden age of science fiction features a rocket scientist from mid-20th-century America who finds himself thrust hundreds of years into the future—where he discovers that his life's work of achieving the goal of interplanetary travel has long since been abandoned.

William Lemoine Bade was an American Science Fiction Writer, born on 5 April 1928 in Lincoln, Nebraska. By profession he was an US academic, physicist and he worked for NASA. He began publishing Hard SF stories with "Advent" for Astounding in January 1948, beginning a short series ending with "The Eight Hundredth Hundred-Day" (Fall 1953 Fantastic Worlds). He wrote three other stories also. He died on 12 February 2005 in Hyannis, Massachusetts.
